SEMICONDUCTOR(PN-JUNCTION DIODE)

A pn-junction diode (rectifier diode) is formed by sandwiching together  n-type and  p-type silicon. In practice, manufacturers grow an  n-type silicon crystal and then abruptly change it to a  p-type crystal. Then either a glass or plastic coating is placed around the joined crystals. The  n side is the cathode end, and the  p side is the anode end. The trick to making a one-way gate from these combined pieces of silicon is getting the charge carriers in both the  n-type and  p-type silicon to interact in such a way that when a voltage is applied across the device, current will flow in only one direction

SEMICONDUCTOR DIODES

Adiode is a two-lead semiconductor device that acts as a one-way gate to electric current flow.  When a diode’s  anode lead is made more  positive in voltage than its  cathode lead—a condition referred to as  forward biasing—current is permitted to flow through the device. However,  if the polarities are reversed (the anode is made more negative in voltage than the cathode)—a condition referred to as  reversed biasing—the diode acts to block current flow.Diodes are used most commonly in circuits that convert ac voltages and current into dc voltages and currents (e.g., ac/dc power supply). Diodes are also used in voltage-multiplier circuits, voltage-shifting circuits, voltage-limiting circuits, and voltage-regulator circuits.

SEMICONDUCTOR LECTURE 2 DOPING

Doping Doping refers to the process of  “spicing up”  or adding ingredients to a silicon wafer in such a way that it becomes useful to the semiconductor-device designer.

Many ingredients can be added in the doping process, such as antimony, arsenic, aluminum, and gallium. These ingredients provide specialized characteristics such as frequency response to applied voltages, strength, and thermal integrity,

SEMICONDUCTORS 1INTRODUCTION lecture 1

The most important and perhaps most exciting electrical devices used today are built from semiconductive materials. Electronic devices, such as diodes, transistors, thyristors, thermistors, photovoltaic cells, phototransistors, photoresistors, lasers, and integrated circuits, are all made from semiconductive materials, or semiconductors.1 What Is a Semiconductor? Microchips Solar cells Materials are classified by their ability to conduct electricity. Substances that easily pass an electric current, such as silver and copper, are referred to as conductors. Materials that have a difficult time passing an electric current, such as rubber, glass, and Teflon, are called insulators. There is a third category of material whose conductivity lies between those of conductors and insulators. This third category of material is referred to as a semiconductor. Asemiconductor

President Buhari tells Nigerians -Ignore allegations of corruption against my ministers

President Buhari has appealed to Nigerians to ignore orchestrated attempts to ruin the integrity of ministers and other senior government officials, who are being tarred with the brush of corruption without any concrete evidence.

Reacting to reports, particularly by online media, that the immediate past Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), who is also Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, is being investigated over crude oil swap deals and gas liftings during his tenure as GMD of the petroleum corporation, President Buhari appealed for decent and civilized comments,

particularly when it has to do with the integrity of those who are serving the country.
"Terrible and unfounded comments about other people's integrity are not good. We are not going to spare anybody who soils his hands, but people should please wait till such individuals are indicted," the President said.

Fraud suspect dies in EFCC custody

Mr
Desmond Nunugwo, a fraud suspect in
the custody of the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission, has died barely after six
hours in the custody of anti graft commission.
The spokesman for the commission, Mr.
Wilson Uwujaren, said in a statement on
Friday that the suspect was arrested for
allegedly duping a woman of N91m.
Nunugwo was alleged to have collected the
money under the pretext that he had high net
worth business associates in Dubai, United
Arab Emirates, who were on the verge of
buying Nicon Insurance and convinced her of
their disposition to help her stock fish
business.
Consequently, she wired N91m into
Nunugwo’s nominated account (Mainagge
General Merchants) in Diamond Bank.
According to the EFCC, the suspect was
arrested following a petition from the woman
who alleged that he had become evasive after
collecting the money.
The deceased was subsequently arrested and
taken into custody around 5.30pm on
Thursday. Six hours, however, Nunugwo was
said to have fallen ill and was rushed to a
hospital where he died.
The statement read in part, “A suspect under
investigation by the EFCC passed away on
June 10, 2016, few hours after he was taken
into custody. His demise was confirmed at
the hospital where he was rushed after he
suddenly took ill.
“The Late Nunugwu allegedly fraudulently
obtained N91m from an acquaintance after he
tricked her into believing that he had high net
worth business associates in Dubai, United
Arab Emirates who were on the verge of
buying Nicon Insurance and convinced her of
their disposition to help her stock fish
business.
“Nunugwo was arrested in Utako, Abuja at
about 5.33pm on Thursday, June 9, 2016. His
statement was taken, where he admitted
receiving the money from the complainant,
with the additional information that he
transferred N30m of the said money to
Norway. But he could not explain the
whereabouts of the balance of N61m.
“The suspect was detained at about 7.30pm,
in the absence of anybody to take him on bail.
Six hours later, he suddenly complained of
discomfort and was rushed to the hospital
where he was pronounced dead.”
The EFCC said the incident had already been
reported at the Wuse Police Station, where
investigation into the cause of the sudden
death had commenced.

Mass sack in banks ploy to discredit FG -APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has
described the mass retrenchment in banking
and other sectors as a sabotage and a ploy by
“certain disgruntled persons to blackmail and
discredit the Federal Government.”
National Auditor of the party, Chief George
Moghalu made the observation in a chat with
Daily Sun at the party’s headquarters,
yesterday. He said it was a deliberate plan
orchestrated by some enemies of the APC
government  to create a situation of
uncertainty and unnecessary frustration of the
system.
“Government has told them to stay action on
the sack of staff or face the consequences. I
don’t know why the banks should be sacking,
we need to ask what has happened to the
profit they have been amassing in the past.
“They ought to have been prepared for the
rainy day. People cannot be manipulated to
create the situation of uncertainty and
unnecessary frustration for the system.
“As far as I am concerned, what is happening
now is pure sabotage. Nigerians should still
trust the APC government.
“I will be ready to engage the media after two
years of President Muhammadu Buhari’s
government.”
Reacting to mixed reactions of Nigerians to
Buhari’s health trip to London, Moghalu said:
“Let us assume he is sick; what is wrong with
someone falling sick? On the contrary, Mr.
President should rather be commended
because things that have not been happening
before are happening now.
“We have a president transmitting power to
his deputy to act while he goes on a 10-day
vacation trip and relayed the information to
the National Assembly.
“Previously, government was personalised and
what we had was a case of ‘if he is not there
everything stops.’ President Buhari has
brought a level of civility in politics. There is
nothing wrong with his going on vacation and
what he does with his vacation period is
entirely his business.
“The Presidency has said that he is not sick to
the extent of incapacitation.
There is no debate about whether he is still fit
to rule the country.” Asked why weeks after
signing the budget, the economy still remains
stagnant, he replied: “I won’t agree that things
are not moving.
“There is a process and contractors will not
go to CBN, open the vault to carry and
distribute money because the budget has
been signed.
“The contracts listed in the budget must be
executed and the process of awarding the
contract has to be followed.
“Tenders must be advertised, the committee
that handles tenders will sit over the
applications and approve them before
awarding the contract.
“The Ministry of National Planning has asked
the agencies of government to summit their
priority projects. “What will not happen is
government asking every Nigerian to line up at
Eagles Square to collect money,” he said.

Lagos airport: 2 Chinese nabbed attempting to smuggle 678 elephant tusks

Officials of the Nigerian Customs Service
( NCS) have arrested two Chinese nationals at
the Murtala Muhammed International Airport
( MMIA) Lagos for attempting to smuggle 678
pieces of elephant tusks and eight sacks of
pangolin weighing over 381 kilogrammes out
of Nigeria.
Exports of the items are considered a severe
breach of the Nigerian law as they are listed
among endangered species and wild life that
should be protected and whose parts should
never be traded under Schedule 6 of the
Nigerian Exports Prohibition List.
Customs Area Comptroller of the MMIA
Command, Frank Nduka Allannah told
journalists that the two Chinese have been
remanded in the custody of the Nigerian
Customs at the Lagos Airport pending further
investigation.
It was learnt that of the impounded items the
scales of pangolin is viewed as the most
trafficked endangered animal and that it is a
much sought after part used in Chinese
medicine.
According to Allannah, the impounded items
will be handed over to the National
Environmental Standards and Regulations
Enforcement Agency ( NESREA).
Allannah said vigilant Customs officials at the
Export Shed of the Lagos international airport
intercepted the prohibited items while they
were about to be freighted out of Nigeria by
the Chinese.
He said the Elephant tusks were in two
compartments of 387 unprocessed pieces ,
while 271 had been processed into combs
and hand bangles.
“ We do not intend to give the names of the
Chinese nationals yet. They have been
arrested and are in Customs custody. They
will be handed over to the relevant security
agencies,” he said.

South African mobile phone firm MTN to pay $1.7bn Nigeria fine

South African mobile-phone giant MTN has agreed to pay
$1.7bn (£1.1bn) to Nigeria over failing to disconnect
unregistered Sim cards.
The firm was originally fined a record $5.2bn by the Nigerian
Communications Commission (NCC) but the two sides have
settled on a lower amount.
"This is the best outcome for the company," MTN executive
chairman Phuthuma Nhleko said.
The fine was imposed amid fears that militants were using the
phone lines.

Petra, Jordan: Huge monument found 'hiding in plain sight'

A huge monument has been discovered buried under the
sands at the Petra World Heritage site in southern Jordan.
Archaeologists used satellite images, drone photography and
ground surveys to locate the find, according to the study
published in the American Schools of Oriental Research.
The large platform is about as long as an Olympic swimming
pool and twice as wide.
Researchers say it is unlike any other structure at the ancient
site.
The study, by Sarah Parcak of the University of Alabama,
Birmingham, and Christopher Tuttle, executive director of the
Council of American Overseas Research Centers, describes
the find as "hiding in plain sight".
Petra dates back to the fourth century BC, when it was
founded by the Nabataean civilization, who inhabited parts of
what is now Jordan, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.
Surface pottery suggests the platform was built in the mid-
second century BC, when Petra was at its peak.
It is thought the structure may have had a ceremonial
purpose.
The survey also revealed a smaller platform was contained
inside the larger one, which was once lined with columns on
one side with a vast staircase on the other.
Mr Tuttle told National Geographic that someone in decades
of excavation "had to know" the structure was there yet it had
not been written up.
"I've worked in Petra for 20 years, and I knew that something
was there, but it's certainly legitimate to call this a discovery."
Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit Petra each year,
although numbers have been hit by the conflict against so-
called Islamic State.
The site is best-known for the Treasury Building, which is
carved from sandstone and featured in Indiana Jones and the
Last Crusade.

Muhammad Ali funeral: Rousing farewell at Louisville memorial

Rousing
tributes have been paid to boxing legend Muhammad
Ali at a memorial service in his home city of Louisville,
Kentucky.
Muslim, Christian, Jewish and other speakers spoke of his
fight for civil rights, while a message from President Barack
Obama praised his originality.
The interfaith event took place hours after thousands said
farewell to his coffin passing through city streets.
Ali was buried in a private ceremony attended by friends and
family.
The ex-heavyweight champion and rights activist died last
Friday aged 74.
The service, attended by dignitaries and by several thousand
people who acquired free tickets, was held at the KFC Yum!
Centre.
After a Koran reading, local Protestant minister Kevin Cosby
set the tone of the event, saying that Muhammad Ali had
"infused in Africans a sense of somebodiness".
"Before James Brown said 'I'm black and I'm proud',
Muhammad Ali said 'I'm black and I'm pretty'," he said.
Rabbi Michael Lerner, editor of a progressive Jewish
magazine, used his speech to launch a blistering attack on
injustice against black people and Muslims.
"The way to honour Muhammad Ali is to be Muhammad Ali
today," he said. "Speak out and refuse to follow the path of
conformity."
Later Valerie Jarrett, an aide to President Obama who knew
the boxer personally, read a letter from the president
describing Ali as "bigger, brighter and more influential than just
about anyone in his era".
"You couldn't have made him up, and yes, he was pretty too,"
Mr Obama wrote.
"Muhammad Ali was America. Muhammad Ali will always be
America. What a man."
The president was not there, as he was attending his eldest
daughter Malia's graduation.
Former President Bill Clinton is to deliver one of the eulogies.
Ali's wife Lonnie paid tribute to her husband. She told the
crowd: "If Muhammad didn't like the rules, he rewrote them.
His religion, his beliefs, his name were his to fashion, no
matter what the cost.
"Muhammad wants young people of every background to see
his life as proof that adversity can make you stronger. It
cannot rob you of the power to dream, and to reach your
dreams."The comedian Billy Crystal delivered a eulogy peppered with
jokes, laughing at the length of the service and saying that his
beard had grown since it started.
Then he said that "35 years after he stopped fighting, [Ali was]
still the champion of the world".
He said: "He was a tremendous bolt of lightning created by
Mother Nature. Muhammad Ali struck us in the middle of
America's darkest night and his intense light shone on America
and we were able to see clearly."
Among those attending the service is King Abdullah of Jordan.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended Thursday's
prayer ceremony and had been due at the service, but cut
short his visit to the US.
The reasons for his departure are not clear, though there are
reports of differences with the funeral's organisers.
Rose petals
The motorcade procession began at about 10:35 local time
(14:35 GMT), more than an hour behind schedule, and took
the coffin past Ali's childhood home, the Ali Center, the Center
for African American Heritage and then down Muhammad Ali
Boulevard.
Onlookers lining the roadside waved, took photos and chanted
"Ali, Ali" as a cortege led by the hearse carrying his coffin
drove through the downtown area.

How to Fix Android 6.0 Bugs on Your Infinix Hot 2 Android One

is so unfortunate that the new Android M was full
with bugs, I received lots of bad complaints about it,
such as;
» Not recognizing USB on PC.
» PSP game not playing
» Lost all his data and files after the upgrade.
» The phone was successfully upgraded to
Mashmallow, but fails to boot up
» Battery drains
» Backed up contacts on Google account only
displays the number and not name after making a
call. I.e when a number you already saved in your
contact called you, it only displays the number and
not name.
» Unable to access any of the previous files on the
phone and yet it shows the space occupied
After going through various complaints from people,
I’ve decided to compile the most common issues
with the phone as stated above and proffer solutions
for them.
Note that, this is just the first roll out update for all
Android One device and there is no how we can
avoid bugs for now. What we need to do now is to
exercise patient till Android 6.0.1 roll-out to fix/
correct the bugs.
Common Problems and Their Solutions
Problem 1: Contact not displaying names after
making or receiving a call
Go to your google settings and remove all google
account, after some minutes, add them back and
your problem should fixed then.
Problem 2: The phone was successfully upgraded to
Mashmallow but fails to boot up
You can go back to Android One using the same
steps you used in upgrading. But
If you have Mashmallow Update on your device or
PC, run it again or flash it via SP Flash Tool.
Problem 3: Not having access to files and document
During initial setup most of us mistakenly put
ourselves in guest account . This means the phone
sees you as a guest. Hence, it restricts your use of
the phone. Please check if guess mode is enabled, if
you’re on it, reset your phone to factory settings.
Problem 4: Battery drain
Wait for few days for the software to settle, if the
problem persist, then go to settings>>>Apps>>check
apps that are currently running on your phone and
force stop the ones you are not using.

PPMC, ALGASCO fingered in diversion as cooking gas price hits N3,500

EFFORTS by the Federal Government to
deepen the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas
(LPG) popularly called cooking gas may have
suffered some setback following allegation of
diversion of LPG vessels to a private terminal.
Executive Secretary of Nigerian Association of
LPG Marketers (NALPGAM), Mr. Bassey
Essien, yesterday told Daily Sun that the
development has led to a disruption in the
LPG supply chain leading to skyrocketing
prices.
He said the disruption in supply has led to a
12.5kg cylinder of gas selling for N3, 500 as
against the initial price of N2, 500, warning
that, if not addressed, the price could hit N4,
000 next week.
‘‘The development has led to the gradual rise
of 20 metric tonne of gas from N2.4 million
to N3.5 million in a spate of one week. And
that is why we are using the opportunity to
alert the concerned authorities to the effect of
this unpatriotic trend because if we keep
quiet, the price may hit N4 million for 20
metric tonne by Friday,’’ he warned.
Essien alleged that officials of the Marine
Transportation Department of the Pipelines
Products Marketing Company (PPMC) in
connivance with a private gas terminal-
NAFGAS owned by ALGASCO, a subsidiary of
the Vitol Group, were frustrating the efforts of
gas marketers to have access to cheap
products.
He explained that, rather than vessels berthing
and discharging at the PPMC terminal, its
officials deliberately create bottlenecks that
would make it extremely impossible for
vessels to discharge forcing them to use the
facilities of the private terminal, which in turn
would use the opportunity to hike pric

Fifa ranking: Eagles climb six spots

Nigeria has climbed six spots upwards to hit
61st place in the Fifa rankings released
yesterday, though 12th ranked in Africa.
Super Eagles have been up and down in the
rankings having ranked 66th in January, 63rd
in February, 62nd in March and 67th in April.
The Eagles were unmoved in May as they
maintained 67th in the grading, but victories
in their international friendly matches against
Mali and Luxembourg last month ensured they
amassed 559 points to move up.
In Africa, the Nigeria national football team is
placed behind Algeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana,
Senegal, Egypt, Tunisia, Cape Verde, Congo
DR, Guinea, Cameroon and Congo.
Algeria moved one place up to number 32 in
the world, while reigning African kings Cote
d’Ivoire dived two places to place number 36.
Argentina and Belgium held firm to the first
and second spot in the world while Austria
returned to the top ten with Uefa Euro hosts
France moving up four places to 17th in the
world.
Slovakia and Madagascar were top movers.
The Europeans climbed eight steps to the
24th place, while the Africans rose 29 places
into the top 108.
The next world ranking will be published on 14
July 2016.
The three-time African champions Nigeria
could still face a very difficult 2018 World Cup
qualifying group even after the latest FIFA
rankings saw them move up by six spots.
It is widely believed that the top 5 in the
continental ratings – Algeria, Cote d’Ivoire,
Ghana, Senegal and Egypt – will enjoy a
better chance of making Pot A of the draw on
June 24 in Cairo, Egypt.
Next week, FIFA will announce the lucky five
top seeds.
The climb up the FIFA rankings was down to
the wins over Mali and Luxembourg achieved
by caretaker coach Salisu Yusuf.
The 20-teams still in the reckoning will be
drawn into five groups of four teams each
with the five overall group winners catching
the flight to Russia in 2018.

Paris floods: Seine at 30-year high as galleries close

The River Seine in Paris is at its highest level for more than
30 years, with floods forcing closed parts of the metro
systems and major landmarks.
The Louvre and Orsay museums were shut while staff moved
artworks to safety as flood levels climbed above 6m (18ft).
The Seine is set to reach as high as 6.5m and unlikely to
recede over the weekend, with more downpours forecast.
At least 15 people have died across central Europe as heavy
rainfall caused flooding from France to Ukraine.
While two people died in France, 10 were killed in southern
Germany as several towns were devastated.
Two more fatalities were reported in Romania and one in
Belgium. Austria, the Netherlands and Poland have also been
affected.
Tens of thousands of people have been forced from their
homes.
The flooding could cost French insurance companies more
than 600 million euros (£470m), according to the industry
association AFA.
In Paris, the Cluny - La Sorbonne and St Michel metro stations
were closed as a precaution while the river spilled onto the
city's streets.
Bridges were closed and non-emergency boats were banned
from the Seine as its swelling forced the closure of museums,
parks and cemeteries.
At the Louvre, curators scrambled to move 250,000 artworks
to higher ground from basement storage areas at risk of
inundation from what President Francoise Hollande called
"exceptional flooding".
Authorities have even taken initial steps to transfer the
presidency and key ministries to secure areas, AP news
agency reported.
An apparent equipment fault led to the river's depth being
wrongly measured for several hours on Friday.
Many locals have preferred to benchmark the rise against the
statue of a soldier - known as the Zouave - standing below the
Alma bridge: His frame is currently submerged up to the waist.
While France's rainfall levels in May were the highest since
1873, the current crisis is eclipsed by the 1910 floods that
saw Paris submerged for two months , when the Zouave was
up to his neck in the Seine.
The river level peaked at 8.62m that year, and has since
reached 7.1m in 1955 and 6.18m in 1982.
Are you in France or Germany and been affected by the
floods? Or run a business or project which has closed due to
flood damage? How are your family and neighbours coping?
If you have an experience you would like to share, or pictures
of the flooding where you are, then share it with us in the

FG SCRAPS P.UTME, PEGS JAMB CUT OFF MARK AT 180

The Federal Government has scrapped post-Unified
Tertiary Matriculation Examinations, UTME, as a
pre-condition to gaining admission into universities
in the country.
The government and stakeholders in education
sector also pegged 180 as benchmark for 2016
admission into universities, polytechnics and
colleges of education to improve quality of
education in Nigeria. These decisions were reached
at the 2016 Combined Policy Meeting on
Admissions to Universities, Polytechnics and other
higher institutions in Nigeria.
The Minister of Education , Malam Adamu Adamu,
while declaring open the meeting, said since the
federal government and stakeholders had
confidence in the examinations conducted by the
Joint Admissions and Matriulation Board, JAMB,
there was no need for other examinations to be
conducted by universities after JAMB exams.
He said: “As far as I am concerned, the nation has
confidence in what JAMB is doing, the universities
should not be holding another examinations and if
the universities have any complain against JAMB,
let them bring it and then we address it".
”But if JAMB is qualified enough to conduct tests
and they have conducted test, then there will be no
need to conduct another test for students to gain
admission".FG SCRAPS P.UTME

8 soldiers feared dead, as militants attack gunboats in Onitsha

Niger Delta militant group, Concerned Militant
Leaders (CML),  has claimed responsibility for
yesterday’s attack at Onitsha river, Anambra
State, where eight soldiers were feared dead.
Spokesman of the group,  popularly known as
General Ben, revealed this yesterday  in the
social media.
He also claimed the group executed the
attack in Nkpor where three persons were
killed and the burning of a police patrol van in
Onitsha.
General Ben, in the statement, said the
group’s action was to show the Federal
Government and security agencies that they
should not underrate the activities of the
Niger Delta militants, or limit their operations
to the region.
The CML group said the members were
working in conjunction with the Niger Delta
Avengers (NDA) to cripple the nation’s
economy.
Ben declared: “My men were responsible for
the killing of eight soldiers at Onitsha river.
They were killed when my men attacked their
military gunboat in Onitsha. We are
responsible for the incident in Nkpor near
Onitsha.
“It may sound doubtful; but we want to tell
Nigerians that we are not limited to Niger
Delta region. This is a warning to the Nigerian
government that no amount of security threat
will deter us. More attacks will still take
place.
“We stand by every ultimatum given to any
group or company. We will touch the soul of
the economy of this nation. We are not
interested in resources but, sovereignty”.
General Ben further said it was not their
intention to strike yesterday, as it coincided
with the anniversary of the Movement for the
Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra
(MASSOB).
“We had to execute the operation to teach the
military lesson.  We have been quiet for a long
time, but time for action has come”,  he
vowed.

Niger Delta Avengers strikes again, blows up Chevron oil well, panic in Bayelsa

LESS than 24 hours after President
Muhammadu Buhari, through the Secretary to
the Federal Government, Mr Babachir David
Lawal assured that he was going to do
everything within his powers to secure oil
facilities in the Niger Delta region, Niger Delta
Avengers struck again, blowing up two major
oil wells in Dibi, Warri.
Buhari, had before the latest assurance vowed
during his Democracy Day address to
Nigerians that if the
militants want to test the resolve of his
government, they are much mistaken as the
government would apprehend the perpetrators
and their sponsors and bring them to justice.
The latest attack which was massive was said
to have been carried out inspite of the heavy
presence of military and their gunboats.
NDA had warned that it would teach the
military bitters lessons for invading Oporoza
and harassing innocent citizens ostensibly,
looking for members of NDA.
Spokesman of NDA, Col Murdoch Agbinibo,
who confirmed the attack said it is an
indication that the military does not have the
capacity to stop NDA.
“With the heavy presence of 100 Gunboats,
four Warships and Jet Bombers, NDA blew up
Chevron Oil Well RMP 23 and RMP 24 at
3:44am this Morning (Yesterday)RMP 23 and
24 are highest producing wells”
A security Source said the latest attack might
force the military to change its tactics and go
on full offensive against the militants in the
region. According to him, the military had
been cautious because they do not want
innocent people to be caught in the cross fire
but from the way things are going with the
latest attack, the military would react strongly.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up
around oil installations in Bayelsa State,
following intelligence report that with major
oil facilities already being crippled by NDA in
Delta State, Bayelsa is the next port of call by
the NDA.
Reports that people of Imiringi community, in
Ogbia Local Government Area have been
warned of an impending attack on the Shell oil
installations in the area by militants has
fuelled speculations that NDA activities would
soon move to Bayelsa.
Investigations across major waterways in the
state indicated naval gunboats and Army
gunboats have been drafted to patrol and
frustrate the activities of militants. Also in
Brass where Nigeria Agip Oil Company
(NAOC) has bulk of its operations, security
has been beefed up as soldiers have been de
ployed to protect the facilities.

Messi tax fraud trial: 'I knew nothing' Barcelona star says

The Barcelona and Argentina football star, Lionel Messi, who
is on trial for alleged tax fraud in Spain, has told a court he
had no involvement in the management of his financial affairs.
"I was playing football, I knew nothing," he said.
Messi and his father Jorge, who manages his finances, are
accused of defrauding Spain of €4.1m (£3.2m; $4.6m).
The authorities allege that the two used tax havens in Belize
and Uruguay to conceal earnings from image rights.
Wearing a dark suit and tie, Messi sat alongside his father in
front of the judge and listened to other testimony for nearly
four hours before being called to testify in the third day of the
trial.
Messi, 28, said he signed documents without reading them
because he trusted his father and the advisers responsible for
managing his finances.
"I only worried about playing football," he told the judge.
Is Messi best of all time?
How Messi reached his 500-goal milestone
Speaking for less than 15 minutes, he said he never suspected
any wrongdoing when his father would ask him to sign
contracts or documents. Jorge Messi also denies the charges.
Spain's tax agency is demanding heavy fines and prison
sentences.
The trial began on Tuesday, and Thursday is expected to be
the final day. A verdict is not expected until next week.
Because of the trial, Messi has missed part of his national
team's preparations for the Copa America, which starts on
Friday in the US. Argentina's first game is on Monday.
Evidence is being considered regarding income related to
Messi's image rights, including contracts with Banco Sabadell,
Danone, Adidas, Pepsi-Cola, Procter and Gamble, and the
Kuwait Food Company.
Messi's lawyers had argued that the player had "never devoted
a minute of his life to reading, studying or analysing" the
contracts.
But the high court in Barcelona ruled in June 2015 that the
football star should not be granted immunity for not knowing
what was happening with his finances, which were being
managed in part by his father.
Messi and his father made a voluntary €5m "corrective
payment", equal to the alleged unpaid tax plus interest, in
August 2013.
The footballer is the five-time World Player of the Year and
one of the richest athletes in the world.

Gujarat riots: India court convicts 24 over Gulbarg massacre

court in India has found 24 people guilty of involvement in
one of the most notorious massacres during the 2002 anti-
Muslim riots in Gujarat.
The special court acquitted 36 others in the so-called Gulbarg
Society killings in Ahmedabad city.
Activists and riot survivors have expressed "disappointment"
and said they would challenge the verdict.
A mob attacked the Gulbarg Society complex, hacking and
burning 69 people to death.
The riots were among the worst since Indian independence.
More than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, died after a train fire
killed 60 Hindu pilgrims.
Muslims were blamed for starting the train fire, and Hindu
mobs eager for revenge went on the rampage through Muslim
neighbourhoods in towns and villages across Gujarat during
three days of violence that followed.
Critics of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was the state
chief minister at the time, say he did little to stop the riots.
In pictures: Inside Gulbarg Society
The Gulbarg residential complex in Ahmedabad was one of
the targets where many Muslims were burnt to death and their
properties set on fire.
On Thursday, 11 people were convicted of murder in
connection with the attack, while the others were found guilty
of lesser charges.
Among those convicted is a local leader of the hardline Hindu
group Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).
Sentencing is scheduled for Monday.
Gulbarg Society killings
69 people died in the attack on 28 February 2002
Bungalows and flats in the society were looted and burnt
66 people were accused in connection with the massacre
- six died before and during the trial and one is still being
sought by police
The trial began on 7 September 2009
338 witnesses, including eight women, were examined
Judge PB Desai said there was no evidence that the attack
was planned and dropped charges of criminal conspiracy
against the accused.
Ehsan Jafri, a prominent Muslim politician and a former
Congress party MP, was among those killed.
Survivors of the Gulbarg massacre say he fired his gun in self-
defence as the mob attacked the complex.
Zakia Jafri, the MP's widow, says her husband called Mr Modi
for help but it never came.
After the verdict, Mrs Jafri said she was "disappointed" with
the outcome, calling it an instance of "half justice".
Activist Teesta Setalvad, who was one of those who filed the
case, said they would appeal the verdict in the high court and
Supreme Court if necessary and would not give up their
"struggle".
Mr Modi has always denied any wrongdoing and has not
apologised for the riots. A Supreme Court panel also refused
to prosecute him in 2013, citing insufficient evidence.
The violence was initially investigated by the Gujarat police
and subsequently by an independent Special Investigation
Team (SIT) appointed by the Supreme Court in 2008.
The Gulbarg massacre was among 10 key incidents in the riots
being investigated by the SIT.
Some of these cases have brought convictions.
In August 2012, a court sentenced 31 people, including
Maya Kodnani, an ex-minister and aide to the then chief
minister Narendra Modi, to life for their part in murdering
97 people in Naroda Patiya, a suburb of Ahmedabad. Ms
Kodnani was granted bail on health grounds in 2014.
In April 2012, a court sentenced 18 people to life
imprisonment for the murder of 23 Muslims in Ode village
in Anand district. Five others were given seven years and
another 23 were acquitted.
In November 2011, a court sentenced 31 people to life in
prison for burning to death 33 Muslims near Sardarpura
village.

Dirtied by success? Nigeria is home to city with worst PM10 levels

The word "Africa" often evokes romantic images of elephants crossing the Kalahari, thundering water at Victoria Falls, or panoramic views from Table Mountain. But an increasingly common sight for Africans -- especially those in Nigeria -- is that of smog, rubbish and polluted water, according to a new report. Four of the worst cities in the world for air pollution are in Nigeria, according to data released by the World Health Organization (WHO). Onitsha -- a city few outside Nigeria will have heard of -- has the undignified honor of being labeled the world's most polluted city for air quality, when measuring small particulate matter concentration (PM10).A booming port city in southern Nigeria, Onitsha recorded 30 times more than the WHO's recommended levels of PM The other three cities named and shamed in the WHO report for high PM10 levels are the transport hub of Kaduna, in the north, which came fifth, followed by the cities of Aba -- in sixth place -- and Umuahia, in 16th position, which are both trade centers in southern Nigeria. Last year, the World Bank reported that 94% of the population in Nigeria is exposed to air pollution levels that exceed WHO guidelines (compared to 72% on average in Sub-Saharan Africa in general) and air pollution damage costs about 1% post of Gross National Income. The WHO study tracked the growth in the two different sizes of particulate matter, PM10 and PM2.5, per cubic meter of air. PM2.5 particles are fine, with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers (µm) to more than 40 micrometers, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. PM10 particles are less than or equal to 10 micrometers in diameter. Nigeria did not feature in the top 10 for PM2.5 levels. Why is Nigeria so polluted? The cause of Nigeria's pollution problem is a complex story. The contributing factors to pollution are a reliance on using solid fuels for cooking, burning waste and traffic pollution from very old cars," Dr Maria Neira, WHO Director, Department of Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health, tells us At home, due to unreliable electricity supplies, many Nigerians rely on generators, which spew out noxious fumes often in unventilated areas. On the street, car emissions go unregulated. Neira adds: "In Africa, unfortunately, the levels of pollution are increasing because of rapid economic development and industry without the right technology." Indeed, Nigeria's economy has raced forward in the past decade, overtaking South Africa as the continent's largest economy in 2014, following a recalculation of its GDP. Agriculture, telecoms and oil are all driving this growth -- at a certain environmental cost. Steps towards a solution The latest WHO report may highlight Nigeria, but the true story in other parts of the African continent remains unknown. The report only included pollution levels from cities with a population of over 100,000 residents that monitor their pollution levels -- something many African cities don't do. "We need to do an assessment of the sources of pollution at city level, also work on better planning of urban collective transport systems, and take very old cars out of service," says Neira. "Regarding the four cities in Nigeria, we would actually like to praise them. They are at least monitoring the pollution levels, others are not even monitoring the air, we know that some are very polluted. "These four cities are moving towards taking action to reduce pollution." With more than 50% of the African population predicted to live in cities by 2030, according to global accounting firm KPMG , the health of the

Cross-border kidnappers nabbed in Rivers

OPERATIVES of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Aba, Abia State Command of the Nigeria police have arrested one Ogochukwu Ihedioha for his alleged involvement in a recent kidnap. This is even as a female member of the gang who was earlier arrested by the police claimed she only cooked for kidnapped victims.

A release signed by the command’s PPRO, SP Ezekiel Onyeke stated that on May 11, 2016, gunmen suspected to be kidnappers abducted a pastor at Clifford Road and after a while on the same day, a lady was also kidnapped at Ngwa Road.

However, following a tipoff, operatives of SARS from Aba stormed the kidnappers’ den at Umuakwu, Ebiri Omuma in Etche Local Government of Rivers State the following day.

On sighting the police team, members of the gang were said to have fled leaving behind their female member whose name was given as Izuchi Nwaforala who claimed she was only hired as a cook to the suspected kidnappers.

The two victims: the pastor and a lady were rescued by the police unhurt.

The unrelenting efforts of the SARS team to arrest the fleeing members of the gang paid off May 25, when following information, one of the suspects, Ogochukwu Ihedioha of No. 9, Ekwulobia Street, Diobu, Port Harcourt was arrested in connection with the kidnap of the pastor and the female victim.

Items recovered from the kidnappers’ hideout include one SMG riffle and 25 rounds of live ammunition.

Onyeke said efforts were being made by the police to track and arrest the other fleeing members of the gang while he called for cooperation from members of the public by volunteering information that would help in apprehending the other members of the gang.

Syria conflict: IS 'attacks rebel-held Syria town of Marea'

Heavy fighting has been reported in northern Syria as so-
called Islamic State tries to capture the rebel-held town of
Marea, near the Turkish border.
IS fighters began a surprise offensive in the area on Thursday
and attacked Marea early on Saturday with tanks and car
bombs, monitors said.
The UN fears for tens of thousands of civilians trapped in the
fighting.
The area between the city of Aleppo and the Turkish border is
split between IS, rebel and government-controlled zones.
A nationwide, but often violated ceasefire, between rebel and
government forces, brokered by the US and Russia in February,
does not include jihadist groups such as the self-styled
Islamic State. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring
group said heavy clashes had taken place inside the walls of
Marea overnight between IS fighters and rebels.
Marea has long been a bastion for non-jihadist rebel forces
who have been fighting President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's
five-year conflict.
It lies within the so-called Azaz corridor - a key rebel lifeline of
supplies that links Aleppo city with the Turkish border but
which has previously been severed by government and Russian
air strikes.
Azaz, 20km (13 miles) north of Aleppo, itself hosts tens of
thousands of displaced civilians.
The IS militants' offensive initially captured six villages around
Azaz and took them to within a few kilometres of the city,
cutting off supplies to Marea to its south.
It is thought some 15,000 residents remain in Marea.
The UN's refugee agency said it was deeply concerned about
the plight of more than 160,000 displaced people who are
massed in the north of the country.
It said fleeing civilians were being caught in the crossfire of
the IS offensive, and that they were struggling to get access to
food, water and medical services.
The Marea fighting shows IS's ability to continue launching
offensives, analysts say, despite losing ground in other parts of
Syria and in Iraq.

New York plane crash: WW2 aircraft in Hudson River

A vintage World War Two aircraft has crashed in the Hudson
River between New York and New Jersey.
The plane - a single-seater P-47 Thunderbolt - went down two
miles (3.2km) south of George Washington Bridge.
Divers later recovered a body - believed to be that of the pilot -
from the submerged plane.
The cause of the crash has not been confirmed, but engine
failure has been cited as a possible cause.
The plane was one of three that flew from an airfield in
Farmingdale, east of New York City.
They were taking part in shooting a promotional video to mark
the 75th anniversary of the American Airpower Museum.
The two other aircraft - a P-40 and a plane taking the
photographs - returned safely to the airfield.
Scuba divers recovered the body of a 56-year-old man three
hours after the crash. New York police identified the man as
William Gordon of Key West, Florida.
College student Siqi Li saw the plane crash into the river.
"It made kind of a U-turn, and then there was a stream of
smoke coming from it,'' he told New York's Daily News.
"It was tilting down toward the water. I thought they were
doing some sort of trick."
In 2009, the pilot of an airliner with 155 passengers and crew
made an emergency landing in the Hudson.
All those on board were later rescued in what later became
known as the "Miracle on the Hudson".

Pakistan bans TV adverts for contraceptives

Pakistani authorities have banned all broadcast
advertisements for contraceptives.
The regulator, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority
(Pemra), said there had been public complaints that they
prompted curiosity in "innocent children".
Pakistan is a socially conservative country and such
commercials were already rare.
Last year a specific advert for Josh condoms was banned as
"immoral" .
Pakistan, the world's sixth most populous nation, has a lower
rate of access to birth control than the average for the region,
according to the World Health Organization.

Lightning injures several in France and Germany

More than 40 people, most of them children, have been
injured by lightning strikes, at a park in Paris and a football
match in Germany.
Lightning struck a birthday party in Parc Monceau in Paris,
injuring 11 people, mostly children. Three victims are in a life-
threatening condition.
They were struck after seeking shelter under a tree, police say.
Lightning also hit a children's football match in Hoppstaedten,
leaving 35 people injured, including adults.
There were no dark clouds and the sky was blue when
lightning struck at the end of the match, witnesses said.
The referee was among three people who suffered serious
injuries. Eleven children and two parents were also taken to
hospital.
The children injured in Parc Monceau had an average age of
nine, police said.
An off-duty firefighter helped with first aid and heart
massages. Officials said the situation would have been much
worse if he had not been there.
Torrential rain also halted play at the French Open as
defending champion Serena Williams was about to start a
match against Kristina Mladenovic.

Freddie Gray death: Officer acquitted of four charges

A police officer has been acquitted of charges related to the
death of a black man in police custody in Baltimore.
Edward Nero was cleared by a judge of second-degree
assault, reckless endangerment and two counts of misconduct
in office.
Freddie Gray, who was 25, died after sustaining a severe spinal
injury in the back of a police van during his arrest in April
2015.
His death caused days of massive protests and unrest in
Baltimore.
Last year, a jury failed to reach a verdict in the case of
another officer connected to Gray's death, William Porter.
Officer Porter was the first of six officers charged in Gray's
death to be tried, with four more trials still to come.
The most serious charges have been made against Officer
Caesar Goodson, the driver of the van.
In Officer Nero's trial, a judge said he "acted as any
reasonable officer would" and did not touch Gray until he was
in handcuffs.
Officer Nero helped load Gray back into the police van after
police said he was kicking, screaming and shaking inside of it.
"The state's theory has been one of recklessness and
negligence," said Baltimore Circuit Judge Barry Williams.
"There has been no evidence that the defendant intended for a
crime to occur."
Compared with some of the other police officers who await

trial, Officer Nero's charges were less serious - and didn't
directly link him to Gray's death.
Other officers who face trial have been accused of second-
degree murder and manslaughter.
The speed with which authorities in Baltimore arrested and
charged the officers involved in the arrest and detention of
Gray was held up as an example of a criminal justice system
acting swiftly at a time of high tension between young black
men and the police.
But protesters who are demanding justice for Gray say the real
measure will be if anyone is in the end held accountable for
his death.
Mr Nero said he was "relieved" that "this nightmare" was
nearing an end.
Baltimore's police union called the trials "baseless
prosecutions".
"None of these officers did anything wrong," said Gene Ryan,
the union's president. "The state attorney's office responded to
the riots and violence in Baltimore by rushing to charge these
officers rashly and without any meaningful investigation."
The prosecution had been hoping to use Officer Porter as a
witness in the other officer's trials. He will face another trial in
June.
Gray's death helped spur a national debate over police use of
force, especially against black men.
In Baltimore, protests raged for days and even turned violent,
prompting officials to declare a state of emergency and deploy
national guard troops.
A post-mortem report found that Gray sustained a neck injury
slamming into a van wall during the ride.
He was not restrained with a seatbelt.
During Officer Porter's trial, prosecutors said he ignored Mr
Gray's pleas for medical help, describing the van as a "coffin
on wheels".

Shekau’s bodyguard kills Boko Haram chief bomb maker – Army

The Nigeria Army says the chief bomb maker
of Boko Haram has been killed by the
bodyguard of Abubakar Shekau, the sect’s
leader.
Sani Usman, Army spokesman, who disclosed
this in a statement yesterday said the bomb
maker was killed while attempting to run away
from the camp of his colleagues.
“In what will be described as a major
breakthrough in the clearance and rescue
operation by the Nigerian military and to also
confirm that all is not well within the Boko
Haram terrorists’ camp, their chief bomb
maker and a high ranking terrorist, was shot
dead yesterday,” he said.
“The chief bomb maker, apart from his high
status in the command structure of the Boko
Haram terrorists was one of their capable
hands involved in making improvised
explosive devices (IEDs), coming after their
chief scientist, called Abu RPG (who has been
killed long ago).
“The chief bomb maker was killed by one of
the body guards of the Boko Haram terrorists
leader, Abubakar Shekau, as he was about to
run away just like several others are doing
because of the intensity of Operation
Crackdown,” the statement said.
The statement added that Boko Haram also
suffered a major setback after another
member of the sect got “completely blinded”
when he was preparing an IED.
“In a related development, one Julelebeeb
who was appointed to take over is now
completely blind because his two eyes were
shattered by shrapnel, in the process of
preparing an IED to consolidate his
appointment.
“There is no doubt that this development has
dealt a devastating blow on the terrorist’s
capacity on IED preparation, suicide bombing
and their ability to sustain their criminal acts.
“We would like to reassure the public that our
troops are continuing with the clearance and
rescue operations successfully in order to
completely clear Boko Haram terrorists
wherever they might be hiding,” the Army
said.

Manchester United sack Van Gaal as Marinho prepares to take charge

poor Premier League campaign and will be
replaced by former Chelsea boss Jose
Mourinho.
Mourinho is almost certain to take over from
Van Gaal, with the former Chelsea manager’s
arrival expected to be confirmed in the next
couple of days.
His Dutch coaching staff – including United

Fresh N2.23trn fraud uncovered in NNPC

Another whopping N2.23 trillion, consisting
$9.75 billion and N378.67 billion, accrued to
the Federation Account as earnings from
various aspects  of operations of the Nigerian
National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and
its subsidiaries covering the 2013 audit period
has been reported to have either been lost or
not remitted.
The revelation is contained in the latest audit
report of Nigeria’s oil and gas and the solid
minerals sector released by the Nigerian
Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative
(NEITI) released yesterday in Abuja by its
board Chairman and Minister of Solid
Minerals, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.
He said the audit, which focused on all
aspects of the extractive industries, showed
that a total revenue flow into the Federation
Account from the oil and gas sector in 2013
was about $58.07 billion, representing about 8
per cent decline when compared to the $62.9
billion realised in 2012.
Fayemi said the decline was attributed to the
drop in oil and gas sales following divestment
of federation equity in some Oil Mining Lases
(OMLs), crude oil losses as a result of
destruction of production facilities, pipelines
vandalism and crude oil theft.
“These outstanding payments were due from
unpaid consideration from the divested OMLs,
cash call refunds from NAPIMS (National
Petroleum Investment Management Services)
and NPDC (Nigerian Petroleum Development
Company) liftings from NAOC JV (Nigerian
Agip Oil Company Joint Venture), among
others.
“The sum of $5.966 billion and N20.4 billion
were recorded as revenue losses to the
federation and these losses were due to
offshore processing agreement, crude swap,
crude theft, among others.
The sum of $599.8 million as under-
assessments, under-payments of petroleum
profit taxes and royalties by oil and gas
companies as a result of the use of different
pricing methodology by the government and
the companies because of the absence of a
new fiscal regime,” he stated.
The report noted however that the continuous
allocation of 445,000 barrels per day to
refineries was not beneficial to the federation
as the refineries were operating at a capacity
of about 24 per cent.
It also noted that the Offshore Processing
Arrangement (OPA) and Crude for Product
Swap (CPS) arrangement introduced by the
NNPC to meet the shortfall in product supply
was not cost-effective as the value of the
products received minus all the costs incurred
was still less than the value of the original
crude. According to report, the loss to the
federation incurred through OPA and SWAP
came to $211.8 million and $306 million
respectively, adding that total value of crude
oil losses to the federation as reported by
three JV companies, in 2013 was put at $4.7
billion.
A total of N33.86 billion also accrued to the
federation from solid minerals sector in the
year under review. According to the report,
out of this, payments from cement
manufacturing companies accounted for
N30.47 billion  representing 89.98 per cent of
the figure, construction companies, N1.98
billion representing 5.83 per cent, mining and
quarrying companies N1.42 billion
representing 4.19 per cent.
However, the management of the NNPC could
not be reached for comment on the report.
The corporation’s Group General Manager,
Public Affairs, Garba Deen Muhammad, only
responded to calls from the reporter that “I
am in a meeting” and could not reply a text
message requesting the position of the
corporation on the report.

Syria blames Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia for deadly bombings

The Syrian government has accused Turkey, Qatar and Saudi
Arabia of being behind a wave of bombings in the coastal
cities of Tartous and Jableh.
The state-run news agency Sana said the attacks constituted
a "serious escalation", and were aimed at derailing peace
efforts.
State media said at least 78 people were killed, while a
monitoring group put the death toll at more than 145.
So-called Islamic State (IS) has said it was behind the attacks.
The cities, on Syria's Mediterranean coast, are part of the
heartland of President Bashar al-Assad and have, until now,
escaped the worst of the civil war.Sana said letters condemning the bombings had been sent
from the foreign ministry to the UN.
"The ministry asserted that these terrorist bombings constitute
a serious escalation by the extremist and malicious regimes of
Riyadh, Ankara, and Doha," the report said.
"They also seek to derail the Geneva [peace] talks and the
cessation of hostilities and truce arrangements, as well as
turning attention away from the Syrian Arab Army's
achievements in the war against terrorism."
Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia support various rebel forces in
Syria but are part of an international coalition battling IS.
Seven co-ordinated bombings happened within minutes of
each other in the port of Tartous and in Jableh, further north.
In Tartous, a car bomb was detonated at the city's bus
station, Sana said. As rescuers ran to the scene, two suicide
bombers also detonated explosives.
Minutes later in Jableh, a car bomb and three suicide
attackers struck at a bus station, a power station and a
hospital.
One report said a suicide bomber had detonated explosives
inside the emergency department of a hospital after helping to
carry victims of the first attack there.
Sana said 45 people were killed in Jableh and 33 in Tartous,
with many more wounded.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based
monitoring group which relies on a network of sources on the
ground, reported that 97 people died in Jableh and 48 in
Tartous.
The Amaq news agency, which is linked to IS, quoted an IS
source as saying militants had targeted "gatherings of
Alawites", a reference to the heterodox Shia sect to which
President Assad belongs.
Russia - a key backer of Mr Assad - has a naval base in
Tartous and an air base near Jableh, from where it has
conducted air strikes on IS targets across Syria.
Russia expressed concern at the blasts and said they
underscored the need to revive the UN-led peace talks, which
broke down last month amid mounting violence.
UN chief Ban Ki-moon denounced the attacks, as did the US.
US Secretary of State John Kerry also spoke to his Russian
counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, by phone and urged him to put
pressure on the Syrian government to stop attacks on Aleppo
in the north and Daraya near Damascus.
A state department spokesman said Russia had "a special
responsibility" to rein in Syrian government forces.
